🚢 Cruise Logistics & Need-to-Know
Car seats, embarkation, kids club, port taxis, budget, and insurance — the stuff that’s easy to forget.
💺 Car Seat Logistics (Full Chain)
You’re managing 2 car seats (Alexis’s convertible + Elodie’s infant seat) across 5 transport modes. Here’s the handoff chain:
- Flights to SJU (Day 1): Gate-check both seats in padded bags at SLC. Pick up at jet bridge in SJU. Free on Southwest.
- Rental car (Days 1-5): Install both seats in the Zezgo rental. You have the car for 5 days.
- Car return → Airbnb (Day 5): After returning the car at SJU, Uber back to Airbnb. No car seats in the Uber — PR does not enforce car seat laws in taxis/rideshares. Hold kids on laps for the 10-min ride.
- Airbnb → Cruise port (Day 6): Uber to Pan American Pier. Same deal — no car seats. Bring seats with you to the port.
- On the cruise (Days 6-12): Store car seats in your cabin. They’re bulky but you’ll need them later. Hang them on the cabin door hooks or stash under the crib.
- Port days (Days 7-11): Leave car seats on the ship. Use licensed port taxis without seats — most Caribbean islands don’t require them in taxis, and drivers rarely have them.
- Disembark → La Catedral (Day 13): Walk from the cruise port to the Airbnb (0.5 mi). Carry/roll the seats.
- La Catedral → SJU at 2:30 AM (Day 15): Pre-booked taxi/Uber, no car seats. 15-min ride. Gate-check the seats again for flights home.
💡 Tip: Bring lightweight gate-check bags that double as protective covers. The seats will get beat up otherwise.
🎒 Embarkation Day Bag
Your luggage goes to porters at drop-off and won’t reach your cabin for hours. Pack a carry-on bag with:
- Passports & cruise docs (SetSail pass)
- Swimsuits & sunscreen (pools open immediately)
- Diapers, wipes, formula for Elodie
- Snacks for Alexis
- Change of clothes for both kids
- Medications
- Phone charger / battery pack
- Credit card (for onboard account setup)
🏨 Kids Club Pre-Registration
Royal Caribbean’s Adventure Ocean has age-based programs:
- Royal Babies & Tots (6-36 months): For Elodie. Parent-attended sessions only (you stay with her). Music, sensory play, storytime. Free but limited spots — sign up on embarkation day.
- Aquanauts (3-5 years): For Alexis. Drop-off program! Arts, games, dance parties, science experiments. Open 9 AM - 10 PM on sea days, 8 AM - 5 PM on port days. Free.
- Night Owl / Late Night: Aquanauts runs until midnight for ~$7/hr on select nights. Great if you want a late dinner.
💡 Register in the Royal Caribbean app before the cruise. Visit the kids club on embarkation day to complete check-in and let Alexis explore.
🚖 Port Day Taxi Reality
What to expect at each port:
- St. Thomas: Open-air safari buses to Magens Bay (~$8/person). Cheap, scenic, no seatbelts. Taxis are shared vans.
- Tortola: Taxis to Cane Garden Bay (~$10/person). Steep, winding mountain roads — can be intense with small kids.
- St. Kitts: Taxis available at port. Negotiate fixed fares upfront. ~$20-30 round trip to Cockleshell Beach.
- Antigua: Taxis at Heritage Quay. Fixed government rates. ~$15/person to Dickenson Bay. Shared rides cheaper.
- Barbados: ZR vans (local minibuses) are cheap but chaotic. For kids, use a licensed taxi — ~$20-30 to Carlisle Bay.
💡 No car seats available at any port. Hold kids on laps. This is normal for island taxis.

🛡 Travel Insurance
With two small kids, a multi-leg itinerary, and a cruise — insurance is worth it. A family plan typically runs $150-300 for a trip this length. Look for:
- Trip cancellation/interruption — if a kid gets sick and you can’t board
- Medical evacuation — if someone needs to be airlifted from an island (cruise ship medical is $$)
- Missed connection — your Day 1 layovers are tight; if you miss the SJU flight, insurance covers the hotel + rebooking
- Baggage delay — reimburses essentials if luggage doesn’t arrive with you
Popular options: Allianz, World Nomads, or check if your credit card includes travel protection (Chase Sapphire, Amex Platinum). Buy before final payment deadline for full cancellation coverage.

Old San Juan’s main plaza. Pigeons, a fountain, and a shaded bench break. Surrounded by cafes and restaurants. Grab lunch at El Jibarito (mofongo, comida criolla) or Chocobar Cortés (Alexis will love the chocolate desserts). Then head back to the Airbnb to pack.

Pack & Rest
Back to the Airbnb by early afternoon. Pack everything, do a final sweep of the apartment. Rest up — tomorrow is brutal. Maybe step out for an early, low-key dinner at Waiter’s or Pirilo Pizza (both walkable) and soak in one last Old San Juan evening.

⚠ Early Night — 5:15 AM Flight
Flight departs SJU at 5:15 AM. You need to be at the airport by ~3:15 AM, leaving the Airbnb by 2:30 AM. Old San Juan to SJU is ~15 min at that hour. The night before: pre-book an Uber or save a local taxi number (don’t rely on the app matching at 2:30 AM). Pack the car seats in gate-check bags. Have the kids sleep in travel clothes. Pack breakfast/snacks — most SJU food is closed before 5 AM. Set multiple alarms. This is the hardest 2 hours of the trip.

San Juan Neighborhoods at a Glance
Not everything is on the Old San Juan strip. Here's what each area offers and whether it's worth your time with kids.
Old San Juan
Your home base (twice!). Historic forts, cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, restaurants, shops. Everything walkable. Day 1 evening you’ll visit for dinner, Day 6 you’ll pass through for boarding, and Days 13-14 you’ll stay at La Catedral Airbnb right in the heart of it.
Condado
Beach strip + dining. 10 min east of Old San Juan. The main urban beach, ocean boardwalk, hotels, restaurants. More of a Miami Beach vibe. Good for Day 5 beach time. Walkable once you're there.
Santurce
Best food in SJ. 15 min east. Art scene, street murals, La Placita market, and the top restaurants (Santaella, Vianda). Daytime is great with kids. Nighttime is a party — skip with little ones.
Pinones / Loiza
Afro-Caribbean culture. 25 min east. Boardwalk, food stalls, mangroves. The bacalaitos here are legendary. Casual, authentic, worth the drive on Day 4.
El Yunque / Luquillo
Nature day trip. 45-50 min east. Rainforest + best family beach. This is your Day 3. Not negotiable — it's the highlight of the whole trip for most visitors.
Isla Verde
Calm beach near airport. 20 min east. Resort strip with the calmest water. Good backup beach if Condado is too wavy. Not much else to do here beyond the beach.
Hato Rey / Rio Piedras
Skip it. The financial/university district. Residential and commercial. Nothing tourist-worthy unless you're specifically looking for the UPR Botanical Garden (nice but not a priority).
Miramar
Low-key residential. Between Old San Juan and Santurce. Some good restaurants, a lagoon. Not a destination on its own, but you'll pass through it. The Courtyard Marriott is here.

Puerto Rico Culture & Good-to-Know
PR is a US territory — no passport needed for entry, USD is the currency, and your phone plan works normally. But the culture is distinctly Caribbean and Latin American.
Language
Spanish is the primary language. Most people in tourist areas speak English, but learning a few phrases goes a long way: “Buenos días” (good morning), “Gracias” (thank you), “Por favor” (please). People appreciate the effort.
Tipping
Same as the mainland US — 18-20% at sit-down restaurants, $1-2/drink at bars, $1-2/bag for porters. Tip Uber drivers as you normally would. At cruise ports, taxi drivers don’t expect tips but appreciate them.
Pace & Timing
Things move on “island time.” Service is slower, meals are longer, and that’s by design. Restaurants may take 15-20 min to bring the check. Don’t rush it — you’re on vacation. If you need to be somewhere, build in buffer time.
Kids Are Welcome Everywhere
Puerto Rican culture is very family-oriented. Kids at restaurants — even nice ones — is normal. Nobody will give you a look if Alexis is being a 3-year-old. High chairs are common. Strangers will smile at Elodie. Relax.
Sun & Hydration
The Caribbean sun is stronger than you think, even on cloudy days. Reapply reef-safe sunscreen every 2 hours. Carry water everywhere. Heat peaks 11 AM - 2 PM — plan indoor or shaded activities for midday with the kids.
Rain
March is dry season, but brief tropical showers can pop up, especially in the afternoon. They pass quickly (15-30 min). Don’t cancel plans over rain — just duck into a restaurant or shop and wait it out. El Yunque is the exception — it’s a rainforest, so expect mist.
Safety
Tourist areas (Old San Juan, Condado, cruise ports) are safe. Use normal city awareness — don’t leave valuables visible in the rental car, don’t flash electronics on empty streets at night. Stick to well-lit, populated areas after dark. With kids, you’ll be in early anyway.
Cobblestones
Old San Juan’s blue adoquine cobblestones are beautiful but uneven and slippery when wet. Wear real shoes (not flip-flops). The stroller will bump but it works. Baby carrier is better for narrow side streets.
🍴 Must-Try Foods, Treats & Drinks by Destination
Every island has its own flavors. Here’s what to eat (and feed Alexis) at each stop.
🇵🇷 Puerto Rico — Days 1-6 & 13-14
PR food is a blend of Taíno, Spanish, and African flavors. Heavy on plantains, pork, rice, and beans. Street food is king.
🍙 Mofongo
Mashed fried plantains with garlic, pork cracklings, and broth. The national comfort food. Get it stuffed with shrimp or chicken. El Jibarito does a classic version.
🍲 Alcapurrias
Crispy fried fritters made from green banana/yuca dough, stuffed with seasoned beef or crab. Best at Luquillo kiosks or La Alcapurria Quema. Alexis will love these.
🐟 Bacalaítos
Thin, crispy salt cod fritters. Cheap street food — $1-2 each. Grab them at the Luquillo kiosks or Piñones boardwalk. Crunchy and addictive.
🍛 Tostones
Twice-fried smashed green plantains. Salty, crispy, served with garlic mayo (mayo-ketchup). On every menu. Alexis-approved finger food.
🍦 Piraguas
Shaved ice cones with tropical fruit syrup — tamarind, coconut, passion fruit, guava. Sold by pushcart vendors on the street. $1-2. Perfect for hot days with Alexis.
🍮 Mallorcas
Sweet egg bread dusted with powdered sugar, pressed like a sandwich with ham and cheese. PR’s beloved breakfast. Get one at a local panadería.
🍰 Quesitos
Flaky puff pastry tubes filled with sweetened cream cheese, glazed with sugar. Found at every bakery and gas station. $1-2. Dangerously good.
🍩 Tembleque
Silky coconut milk pudding dusted with cinnamon. Jiggly, creamy, and light. A classic PR dessert. Kids go crazy for it.
🍹 Limbers
Frozen fruit cups — basically homemade popsicles in a plastic cup. Coconut, passion fruit, or cream cheese flavors. Sold from home freezers and street carts. $1.
☕ Café con Leche
Strong, dark Puerto Rican coffee with steamed milk. PR takes coffee seriously — local beans are excellent. Served everywhere, even at roadside stands.
🍺 Malta India
Sweet, malty, non-alcoholic carbonated drink. Tastes like liquid bread — sounds weird, very addictive. Every colmado (corner store) has it. Alexis might dig it.
🍉 Arroz con Gandules
Rice with pigeon peas, sofrito, and pork. The unofficial national dish. Served at every local restaurant. Hearty, flavorful, toddler-friendly.
🇻🇮 St. Thomas, USVI — Day 7 (Mar 23)
Caribbean-American fusion. West Indian flavors with a heavy Danish colonial influence. USD accepted everywhere.
🍞 Johnny Cakes
Golden fried dough balls, crispy outside and soft inside. Served plain or stuffed with saltfish, cheese, or meat. Breakfast staple. Alexis will devour these.
🥪 Pate (PAH-tay)
Flaky fried pastry filled with spiced beef, chicken, saltfish, or conch. The island’s signature street food. Basically a Caribbean empanada. $2-4 each.
🐟 Conch Fritters
Chopped conch in seasoned batter, deep-fried. Served with spicy dipping sauce. Available at beachside restaurants near Magens Bay.
🍛 Fungi (FOON-gee)
Cornmeal and okra side dish, similar to polenta. Usually paired with fish in butter sauce. The USVI national dish. Mild flavor — kid-friendly.
🍩 Virgin Islands Tart
Flaky pastry filled with spiced coconut, guava, or pineapple. Sweet, buttery, and rich. Found at local bakeries. A perfect afternoon treat.
🍹 Passion Fruit Juice
Fresh-squeezed, tart, and tropical. Called “parcha” locally. Available fresh at restaurants and juice stands. Also try soursop and mango juices.
🇧🇾 Tortola, BVI — Day 8 (Mar 24)
British-Caribbean fusion. Similar to USVI but with its own twists. Roti is huge here from East Indian influence. USD accepted despite being British territory.
🥬 Roti
Large soft flatbread wrapped around curried chicken, goat, or vegetables. BVI’s most popular lunch. Filling, portable, messy in the best way. Alexis can handle the chicken version.
🐟 Conch in Butter Sauce
Tender conch sautéed in garlic butter sauce, served with rice and peas. A local classic. Available at beachside restaurants in Cane Garden Bay.
🍞 Coconut Bread
Dense, sweet bread loaded with shredded coconut. Often eaten at breakfast or as a snack. Moist and fragrant. Every bakery makes their own version.
🍦 Guavaberry Tart
Small pastry filled with guavaberry jam. Tart-sweet and unique to the BVI/USVI. The guavaberry is a tiny local berry that grows wild on the islands.
🍴 Fish & Fungi
Steamed or grilled local fish with fungi (cornmeal/okra) and a tomato-based Creole sauce. The BVI national dish. Simple and satisfying.
🍅 Fresh Coconut Water
Hacked open with a machete and handed to you with a straw. Available from vendors near the beach. Nothing tastes better after a hot day. $3-5.
🇰🇳 St. Kitts — Day 9 (Mar 25)
African, British, and Creole influences. The national dish is stewed saltfish — hearty and flavorful. Sugar cane history runs deep in the food.
🐟 Stewed Saltfish
The national dish: salted cod stewed with tomatoes, peppers, onions, and spices. Served with breadfruit, plantain, or coconut dumplings for breakfast or lunch.
🍛 Pelau
One-pot rice dish with chicken, pigeon peas, and caramelized sugar giving it a brown color. Caribbean comfort food. Filling and toddler-friendly.
🍬 Sugar Cake
Crunchy, sweet coconut candy made from grated coconut and sugar, often tinted pink or white. Sold by vendors near the cruise port. Alexis will go nuts for these. $1-2.
🍭 Tamarind Balls
Tangy-sweet-spicy candy made from tamarind pulp rolled in sugar. An iconic Caribbean treat found at every island. Sour kick that kids either love or hate.
🍰 Spice Cake
Dense, dark cake loaded with cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Moist and aromatic. Sold by the slice at bakeries. Perfect with coffee or as a snack.
🍶 Ting
Carbonated grapefruit soda. Crisp, tart, refreshing. The Caribbean’s answer to Sprite but a million times better. Available in bottles everywhere. Kids love it.
🇦🇬 Antigua — Day 10 (Mar 26)
West African and British roots. The national dish (fungie & pepperpot) shows the African influence. Famous for its black pineapple — the sweetest in the world.
🍛 Fungie & Pepperpot
National dish: cornmeal-okra (fungie) with a thick stew of spinach, squash, eggplant, and salted meat (pepperpot). Rich, earthy, and comforting.
🍠 Ducana
Sweet potato dumplings wrapped in banana leaves, seasoned with coconut, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Steamed until dense and fragrant. Unique to Antigua — don’t skip this.
🍍 Antigua Black Pineapple
Small, intensely sweet, low-acid pineapple unique to Antigua. Considered the world’s sweetest. Buy a fresh-cut cup from a vendor near the port. Alexis will demolish it.
🍬 Coconut Sugar Cakes
Chewy coconut candy similar to St. Kitts version but with a distinct Antiguan twist — often with a hint of ginger. Pink, white, and brown varieties.
🥪 Saltfish Patties
Flaky pastry stuffed with seasoned salted codfish. Similar to Jamaican patties but with Antiguan spicing. Great grab-and-go snack near Heritage Quay.
🍹 Tamarind Juice
Tangy, sweet-sour fresh juice. An island staple. Also try sorrel (hibiscus) juice — bright red, floral, and refreshing. Both are non-alcoholic.
🇧🇧 Barbados — Day 11 (Mar 27)
Bajan food is the most distinct in the Caribbean. African, British, and Indian influences. Flying fish is everywhere. Barbados takes food seriously — Rihanna’s homeland knows flavor.
🐟 Flying Fish Cutter
The iconic Bajan sandwich: breaded and fried flying fish in a salt bread roll with lettuce, hot sauce, and pickled slaw. The island’s #1 street food. Get one near the port.
🍛 Cou-Cou & Flying Fish
The national dish: cornmeal-okra (cou-cou, like fungie) with steamed flying fish in a tomato-based Creole gravy. Served at every local restaurant. Must-try.
🥪 Fish Cakes
Seasoned saltfish mixed with herbs, formed into balls, and deep-fried. Crispy, savory, and sold everywhere for $1-2 each. Perfect snack while exploring Bridgetown.
🍜 Macaroni Pie
Bajan mac & cheese but baked firm enough to slice. Creamy, cheesy, with a hint of mustard. Served as a side with everything. Alexis will ask for seconds.
🍰 Bajan Sweet Bread
Dense, spiced bread loaded with coconut, cherries, raisins, and almond essence. Sold at bakeries by the loaf or slice. Rich and fragrant.
🍬 Turnovers
Flaky pastry filled with sweetened coconut. Golden, buttery, and crispy. A beloved Bajan bakery staple. Grab one from a rum shop or bakery (they’re everywhere).
🍺 Mauby
Dark, bittersweet drink made from boiled mauby bark with spices and sugar. An acquired taste — root beer-ish but more herbal. Uniquely Bajan. Non-alcoholic.
🍭 Tamarind Balls
Found here too — Bajan version often spicier with pepper added to the sugar coating. Sweet-sour-hot. Sold in small bags by street vendors for $1-2.
💡 Pro tip for port days: Eat near the cruise terminal before reboarding — food is cheaper and more authentic on land than on the ship. Most local spots near ports are set up for cruise passengers and serve quickly. Budget $15-25 for lunch for two adults + toddler food at each port.
⚠ Heads-Up Warnings
Things that could catch you off guard if you don’t plan for them
- Day 15: 2:30 AM wake-up. Your 5:15 AM flight means leaving Old San Juan at 2:30 AM. Pre-book transport, sleep in travel clothes, pack breakfast. SJU has limited food before 5 AM. This is the worst part of the trip — plan for it.
- Day 6: 5.5-hour gap. Airbnb checkout is 11 AM, boarding is 4:40 PM. Drop luggage at the cruise port first (porters take it at drop-off), then Uber back to Condado for beach or lunch on Ashford Ave. All guests must be onboard by 6:30 PM — don’t cut it close.
- Day 1: Tight flight connections. 55-min layover in DEN, 35-min layover in MCO. No time to wander. If either flight is delayed, the whole chain breaks. Have Southwest’s customer service number saved: (800) 435-9792.
- Car rental deposit. Zezgo requires a physical credit card (Visa/MC) in the driver’s name + physical license. Digital wallet or phone screenshots won’t work. They will turn you away.
- Reef-safe sunscreen is the law. Regular sunscreen with oxybenzone/octinoxate is banned in PR & USVI waters. Buy reef-safe (SPF 50+) before you go — it’s cheaper on the mainland.
- Uber at 2:30 AM may not match. Save local taxi numbers as backup: Taxi Túristico (787) 396-6127, Metro Taxi (787) 945-5555. Don’t leave this to chance with a sleeping 3-year-old and a baby.
- Cruise port taxis at islands. Only use licensed taxis at the cruise terminal. Prices are often fixed — confirm the fare before getting in. Don’t accept rides from unofficial drivers in the parking lot.
- El Yunque reservations. The rainforest may require advance reservations on recreation.gov. Check before the trip. Walk-ups are sometimes available but not guaranteed, especially on weekends.
